
Edward D. Alkalay is a co-founding member of Alkalay & Smillie, PLLC. He maintains a general practice and assists clients across a wide range of legal matters, with a particular focus on civil litigation, association law, personal injury, and criminal defense. Attorney Alkalay works closely with individuals, businesses, and homeowner and condominium associations to help them avoid unnecessary legal disputes whenever possible, while providing vigorous and effective representation when litigation is unavoidable. With more than 30 years of experience, he is known for his practical judgment, clear communication, and commitment to achieving efficient, cost-effective outcomes for his clients. From 1999 to 2004, Attorney Alkalay served as an Assistant United States Attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., representing the federal government in a wide range of complex matters. Earlier in his career, he served as a federal law clerk to the Honorable James T. Turner of the United States Court of Federal Claims and to the Honorable William I. Garfinkel of the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut. Prior to his federal service, he worked as a prosecutor and Assistant Corporation Counsel in New York City.
When he’s not at work, Ed enjoys spending time with family and friends and has a deep affection for all animals. His dog, Feather, is often right by his side at the office and is well known to clients and staff alike. Additionally, music has always been an important part of Ed’s life. In the past, Ed was an active musician with three CDs to his credit, and in recent years, he has enjoyed devoting time to playing and studying classical guitar. Attorney Pamela Smillie is a member of Alkalay & Smillie PLLC, where she engages in the general practice of law. More specifically, her practice focuses on business law, estate planning, and probate. She is experienced in transactional law, which includes but is not limited to buying and selling businesses, forming limited liability companies, and advising clients with respect to leases and contracts in a variety of legal matters. Pam is known as a kind, thoughtful attorney who consistently puts her clients’ best interests first. She brings a calm, practical approach to her work and is committed to helping clients
achieve the best possible outcomes for their legal matters. In her estate planning practice, Attorney Smillie’s objective is to assist her clients in understanding their estate planning documents. These documents may consist of wills, revocable trusts, statutory powers of attorney for financial matters, and advance directives. Prior to co-founding Alkalay & Smillie, PLLC, Pam spent over 15 years in private practice as an attorney with firms in Manchester and Conway, focusing on corporate law, real estate law, estate planning, and probate. Pam enjoys swimming in the rivers, walking on the trails (and a little bushwhacking), working in the community garden, and experimenting with permaculture at home. Attorney Jon Burk counsels businesses and individuals in civil litigation, dispute resolution, and related matters in New Hampshire and Maine. He provides practical guidance and professional advocacy in matters including property and boundary disputes, construction defect cases, breach of contract claims, trespass, nuisance, and landlord-tenant issues. Attorney Burk also assists clients with personal injury claims, small business formation, and contract drafting. Prior to joining Alkalay & Smillie, Attorney Burk practiced civil litigation and real estate transactions in Western Maine, where he regularly appeared in the local Superior and District Courts. Before attending law school, he worked in economic policy and startup operations, experience that informs his pragmatic approach to resolving legal issues. Attorney Burk brings a local perspective to his practice having grown up in the Mount Washington Valley and graduated from Fryeburg Academy. Outside the office, he enjoys live music and outdoor recreation in the White Mountains.
